Château de Chantegrive “Caroline”, 2014

– The Caroline cuvée is the flagship of the wines produced by Chateau de Chantegrive. This top of the range dry Graves Blancs gets its good reputation from its airy thickness, always enhanced by an accurate acidity. This wine’s freshness and volume on the palate are due to the cold soak that then ended by an ageing process on lees in French oak barrels (50% new barrels) with regular stirring of the lees. The 2014 Caroline offers an intense nose on citrusy (lemon and grapefruit) notes followed by white flower hints (lilac and acacia). Aromatic freshness and clearness are expressed on swirling. The attack is frank and releases a few surprising (for a dry wine) pineapple, mango and litchi notes. This wine offers good volume, and its balance is assured by minerality and accurate acidity.

Clos Floridene, Grand Vin de Graves, 2014

– A blend of 55% Sauvignon Blanc and 45% Semillon, the Sauvignon is dominant on the nose, with the round Semillon comma through in the mid palate. Acidity fairly high, this is a classic dry white Bordeaux, one for lovers of the style. Barrel ageing on this wine lasts for eight months, with regular lees stirring, in 25% new oak. Lovely crisp aromatics.

88-90 points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“The Clos Floridene Blanc 2014 has a very composed nose in the making. This is keeping everything back, but there is appreciable delineation with citrus peel, white peach and apple peel aromas. The palate is crisp and fresh with good acidity, just a little rasping on the finish but there is commendable length and a sense of energy here. This will probably represent great value. Le G de Château Guiraud, 2016

– Château Guiraud is one of the few properties to be located within the village of Sauternes itself (the only other being its illustrious neighbour Château Yquem). Alongside sweet wines they also produce an organic dry white.
Fermented in barrel and aged for 7 months on its lees, this wine has great texture and depth. Crisp gooseberries, honey and just a touch of blossom.

Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon, Cape Mentelle, 2014
Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon, Cape Mentelle, 2014
Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon, Cape Mentelle, 2014

Cape Mentelle takes a minimal approach towards this classic Margaret River blend. The aim is to preserve as much fruit intensity and regional character as possible, whilst providing a full flavoured distinctive white wine. The style accentuates the fresh fruit characters of both varieties with the added complexity and palate weight offered by a small portion of barrel fermentation. Pale straw with green hues. On the nose – Varietal Sauvignon notes revolving around cassis buds, juniper berries and cracked black pepper. The nose then opens to complex fruit ranging from zesty white grapefruit to hints of lychees, lifted by ethereal oral notes of jasmine and passionflower. The attack is juicy clean, slightly saline, on notes of passion fruit and citrus. The fresh pithy acidity and mineral character, reminiscent of fine absinthe, fresh ginger and gentian bitters give the wine a lot of vinosity and masculine personality, well balanced by the honey notes and creamy texture of the Semillon and showing exceptional length.
